Clothing care is easier when it starts with the instructions for the particular garment. A hoodie, a printed T-shirt and a delicate fabric may need different treatment.

Let the care label lead

Read washing, drying and ironing instructions before the first clean. Fibre content, print and construction all affect how a garment should be treated. If the instructions are unclear, ask the seller.

Wash when it needs washing

Choose a cycle suitable for the garment and sort items as the labels advise. Check pockets and close zips where appropriate. Avoid adding more detergent than the product instructions recommend.

Dry with the garment in mind

Follow the label rather than assuming every item can be tumble dried. Shape and dry items in the recommended way, and keep direct heat away from sensitive prints where the care instructions require it.

Store it ready for next time

Put garments away clean and dry. Folding heavier knitwear can help avoid stretching it on a hanger. Deal with loose threads or small repairs before they become larger problems.
